The Father for Her Son Page 19

  “You’re sure?”

“I’m sure.” Her gaze was steady and unblinking. “I love you, Troy. More than ever.”

“I love you, too.” He clasped her hands in his and spoke the same words he’d said seven years earlier. “Marlee Britton, will you marry me?”

He could see the shock on her face. “Marry you?”

He nodded. “I told you, I want to do everything right this time.”

“I always thought happily ever after was make-believe,” she said.

“It’s only make-believe if you think happiness happens all by itself, with no work on your part.” He squeezed her shoulder. “What do you say, Marlee? We’ve spent so much time worrying about the past. Let’s work on the future—together. I don’t believe in fairy tales any more than you do, but I know we can be happy together.”

The smile he’d glimpsed earlier found its way to her lips now. “So do I,” she said. She kissed him, a lingering, soul-searing caress that left him dizzy. “Yes, I’ll marry you,” she breathed when at last they parted. “And we will be happy together. I’ve never wanted anything more.”

“You’re all I ever wanted,” he said. “You and our son.” A family at last.
